Permit questions please?

i took a permit test when i was 17 years old and passed it. all that i had to do was go to the dmv and get a. i.d for it.. im 19 and i plan on getting my permit but i want to know if i ave to take the test over being that its been like 3 years.. i also live in new york city if that matters. any advice would be appreciated
